FFXIII

No one made a topic on this? Are you too cool for RPGs? I've been playing it and well all my friends already beat it. I'm enjoying it so far. It's linear like FF10 though, but I like the battle system. They made it fast paced, and you don't have mp to worry about. I know, how could they take that away? Well it's all for the better, the system is very fun. The story is decent too, although they did a good job making it seem more complicated than it really is.

It's also similar to the FF10 sphere grid, but better imo.

Big downside though, if you get it for PS3, there's a 10% chance the game will just randomly freeze after a cutscene. The disc won't even be scratched and it'll just do that. Best to hold onto the receipt and exchange it for a different disc. Square Enix claims the game does it because the disc is scratched, but they probably won't admit that they themselves don't understand the reason why it does that.

Anyway, graphics of course are very nice particularly for PS3 since it's blu-ray. Music is great even though it's not by the same guy who did FF7, which had the best music. You kinda dislike most of the characters at the beginning of the game but you like them more as the story progresses and as they grow as a character.

Well I'm not picky like a lot of people are, but the game isn't for everyone. I had friends who thought the story was okay, one friend who just hated the game altogether (then again he has questionable tastes for games), and others who liked it and especially the new battle system. I think it's probably more likeable than FF12. I liked FF12, but the story wasn't as exciting. FF13 is a little better, but no story can beat FF7 or FF9 imo.

i got it last week.  graphics are terrific, story is a bit much so far.  i hate that it is so linear but someone told me it doesn't really open up until about after 30 hrs in...i'm close.  i miss buying weapons and armor.  i do enjoy no MP and using the paradigms.  it can make for some really hectic battles.  a com/med/med combo is pretty handy against really tough enemies  ;)

Oh I have a trick for you to maximize your dps (if you havent figured it out or if no one told you yet).

You'll want 2 paradigms that are "Com/Rav/Rav" or "Rav/Rav" depending if you have 2 or 3 people.

Have the commander attack the mob(s) first to put his "buff" on that mob, that is, make it so the stagger bar doesn't go down too fast.

Then switch to one of your paradigms (we'll just call it paradigm 1) that is rav/rav. Do it twice, as in, let your all your ATB gauge bars fill up all the way twice. Then once you get your last attack in of the second time you go through the entire ATB bar, immediately switch to the second paradigm (paradigm 2) that's also rav/rav. When you do so, your ATB bars will instantly be filled and you can attack immediately.

This is how it works, the first time you use your ATB bars for paradigm 1, paradigm 2 fills up half way. The second time you use your ATB for paradigm 1, paradigm 2 fills up all the way. So when you switch to paradigm 2 it'll be filled up. And this is helpful not just for staggering an enemy the quickest way possible, but it helps to get instant heals out if your leader has critical health.

I'm not sure how many hours I put into the game yet cuz I haven't checked, but I have everyone together in the party so I can get some unique paradigms that help me a lot such as sab/syn/sab and sent/syn/med... I like using Fang/Sahz and Vanille or Hope, it seems to be the best combination of people.

Anyway, yea the story seems like there's a lot going on, but its actually a pretty simple concept. The Japanese just don't explain it clearly and pretend there's a lot to it. But really, Japanese stories as of late in video games are just going downhill. I guess they didnt have to worry too much about FF13 because the fact that it is Final Fantasy sells itself. I still think its better than FF12 story-wise though.

I have the game, but I've paused on Chapter 12 for a bit. I spent quite a while on Gran Pulse grinding, but the monotony of Auto-Battle has made me have to take a break. it just isn't efficient to do anything else in the combat system.

I really hope they go back to proper FFVII turn-based sometime down the line.

i agree.

i did as many missions as i could in chapter 11...had like 3-4 left.  you just can't do them all at the level you get capped at until after you beat the game once through.  the whole game was too linear for my taste.  there wasn't much else to do besides the chapter 11 missions and those were not fun with the amount of running back and forth you had to do.
