New Comp - need feedback please
« on: January 31, 2010, 12:42:18 PM »
Was going to get something cheap for word processing etc, but BC2 tempts me. Also getting USB 3.0 seems to make sense. If I can do both of those and get a quiet system for about 1500 I'll be happy.

If anyone can look over the parts list and provide feedback that would be great.

CPU:
Intel Core i7-920 Bloomfield 2.66GHz

MOBO:
ASUS P6X58D Premium LGA 1366 with USB 3
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131614

RAM:
OCZ Gold 6GB (3 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820227365

VIDEO:
EVGA 01G-P3-1158-TR GeForce GTS 250 1GB 256-bit DDR3
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130514
Will this be enough?

Main Hard Drive:
Intel X25-M Mainstream SSDSA2M080G2XX X 2.5" 80GB SATA SSD
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820167016

POWER:
COOLER MASTER Silent Pro 700 RS-700-AMBA-D3 700W
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817171037

Think that'll work out?

Spend less on a Solid State drive and get a better graphics chip. that will be your main bottleneck. I have a huge problem with spending more on a hard drive than a Graphics card.

What is a good card to go with? It seems like the GTX cards are about twice as much. Is that worth it? Any specific recommendation s?

The SSD is meant to fulfill non-gaming needs, so I'll go over 1500 if the HD is responsible.

I have a GTX 275, and I'm really happy with it. It's big - takes up 2 of the rear slots (not 2 PCI slots, there's a fan exhaust in the 2nd spot) but runs great. All my games are maxed, and I get at worst 100 FPS in L4D2.

Really pretty poor advice.  upgrading a graphics card later=3 minutes.  updating a hard drive= hours of formating

i assume you're getting a 2nd hard drive for storage?  80gb is like masturbating with a rusty cheese grater...what.  lego told me to say that...what.

I'm using 600 gigs right now on my HD. 80gb is tiny.

Indeed. The Solid State drive is for the OS (OS's boot extremely fast from SSDs) and other files that have loading bottlenecks (large images that need to be edited in my case).

If you're gonna build now, chuck the GeForce and get something like this with DX11 support:

im totaly up with the ati- out with nvidea- even there super new chips are not dx 11 and ati is still cheaper- if u scrounge around new egg u can find a 5770 for or under 160. some days is free shi9pping or mail in rebate so on and so forth- that nvidea card is 1 gig ddr3 go for the ddr5. i would like to point out that if u go with a amd black quad core that u could save monies and overclock it to 3.0 and it would still love u back- just need a 8 mill fan and a huge copper heat sink----- maybe a box fan rofl

As for the SSD card, you'll only enjoy it's speed for short period of time.
It's still not fully completed and over time, SSD loses it's performance.

If I were you, I'll go ahead buy either 500GB or 1TB spin disk for about $50 - $80. And with that extra money invest it on ATi's 5870 card. this card is almost on par with GTX 295 also supports dx11.

That's just my thought of improving your pc performances.
And you'll love me hard core for making that decision for you.

Not really. I really doubt you'd notice the difference between a Raptor and an SSD. The technology is way overpriced, so I don't see the cost vs. Benefit being a factor for your argument here. You can get a 500g hard drive for a fraction of that cost, and put 200$ more into a graphics chip, and I doubt you'd notice any slowness on the hard-drives part.

SSD is overrated IMO. You can read/write to/from the hard drive all you want, but if installing shit 2 seconds faster means that much to you, then go for it, and waste your cash.

SSD isn't about installing faster, rather it is about loading faster. People who do things similar to what I am looking for claim that an SSD is the piece of hardware that results in the most noticable upgrade.

However, it is way overpriced right now and the longevity of the drive is questionable. As I will not need this upgrade for many months now I plan to wait for the price to go down.

Thanks for the comments everyone.

OMG. I'm at work, and I think I just peed myself reading that!

But seriously, I agree.  Only 80GB?  All of that for 1600$ sounds too much, no?
