maybe your onboard sound is defected?
is it plugged in right? (my onboard sound plug is ridiculous, 8 holes!!!)
do you have more than one mic?
if you are using vista, did you configure it from control panel?

No Vista, XP Professional. It's plugged in right because I can talk in vent just fine. The strange part is when I do the voice setup for steam it works just fine. The voice setup for CS:S is where it fails completely. I'll have to do some more testing but it is just weird why it seems to work everywhere else but in game.

since ive been back had same issue, vent works, no in game voice though.  tried rebinding to several keys, all keys work.  press key and nothing happens.  little speaker icon doesn't even show up.  this the same as what you're dealing with?  any thoughts?

No i get the icon there just is nothing transmitted. It is almost as if because I'm using a headset for the first time and the onboard card, its confused and doesn't know what to do.

I think the best solution would be to go back to using my SoundBlaster Live! from 98!

try checking all the voice options in console...just type in voice in console and the list should show up.not sure what everything should be set to but maybe you'll find something.  also, does it happen in other steam games?

Possible that your sound card might just not have enough channels? I know that vent bugs out when I try to play Grand Theft Auto 4 because of the sheer amount of voices in the game at once.

just fixed mine.  close out cs and click on your steam tray icon and select settings.  voice tab, and make sure the right mic is selected.  my windows default mic was incorrect.  vent used propper one (i guess cause i chose it through vent setup) but steam uses windows default.  so make sure your windows default mic is correct.  hope this helps

Yeah. As I said earlier. Mic works fine through  steam, its only CS:S that wont let the mic work.
strange part is when I do the voice setup for steam it works just fine. The voice setup for CS:S is where it fails completely.
